000237 07-public-role_wmp_a_16.wma 000000 ERIK SCHMIDT: So you mentioned earlier that the Patent Busting Project started with you selected the ten most wanted patents 000008 with overly broad with potentially prior use, and prior art rather. 000016 So what do you see the role of technologists and the general public in helping you with the Patent Busting Project? 000024 JASON SCHULTZ: Well, we rely very much on the public at large and technologists who want to help us out. 000030 With each patent we try and put up a description of the prior art we're looking for and we try and put it out there in non-legalese. 000038 In very clear sometimes technical terms about what piece of evidence we're looking for 000044 and we've gotten some great submissions. 000047 When we make our announcements about what we're looking for people are very eager to respond and help. 000053 And so that's actually been our greatest asset in many ways. 000055 So it's been the public's willingness to help take a look around in their own disciplines and try and help us find things. 000103 Or help us contact someone who's an expert in the field who might be able to do us a favor at no cost by helping us find something we need. 000112 ERIK SCHMIDT: Do you find that, in general, since the EFF has started, do you find that there has been a growth in interest in the public at large? 000122 and the issues that you're bringing up, not just at the Patent Busting Project? 000127 JASON SCHULTZ: Yes EFF has been lucky to have been around now for 16 years. 000132 And when it started out I think it was a much smaller group of very dedicated sort of cyber libertarians who were helping us sort of get our feet planted. 000146 But now so many people use the Internet, so many people search on Google, send e-mail, IM their friends and their loved ones 000156 or blog about whatever they're doing on a daily basis. 000200 That when we talk about these issues it really reaches much deeper into society. 000205 My parents actually know what I do now, for instance. 000209 They actually get it because they use a lot of these tools or they have friends who do. 000213 And I think people start to see that your individual rights and personal freedoms are at stake. 000220 If you can't publish online it is a form of censorship. 000225 If the government is reading your e-mail that is an invasion of your privacy. 000231 If a patent holder can control your use of technology that is a freedom that you lose.
